A busy Ground frequency at Langley Regional (CYNJ)

Advanced · Langley Regional (CYNJ) · ~3 min

Practises what to do when Ground says 'stand by': wait, then make your request when Ground says 'go ahead', which is not a taxi clearance (NAV CANADA VFR Phraseology guide p. 18).

The situation

You are the pilot of C-GABC, a Cessna 172 parked at Langley Regional (CYNJ). You plan to fly circuits, and you have listened to the ATIS. It is a busy morning. Call Langley Ground and request taxi.

  • NAV CANADA VFR Phraseology (v3, April 2022), 'Stand By' (p. 18): '"Stand by" means wait, the individual (ATS unit or pilot) who initiated the stand by will re-establish contact when they are ready to do so'; 'The phrase GO AHEAD is only used as an instruction to proceed with your transmission. It is not used as an authorization for an aircraft or vehicle to taxi, or to approve a request.' The guide's example is a flight plan update with an FSS; the pattern (stand by, then go ahead) is applied here to a Ground taxi request
