radio.training is run by one person. You can use it without signing up, and there is no advertising and no third-party analytics or tracking scripts of any kind. This page describes what the app does and does not store, and is updated when that changes.
What the app stores
The app records how it is used so that it can be improved. None of it is linked to your name.
- A random visitor ID. The first time you visit, your browser generates a random identifier and keeps it in localStorage. It is not linked to your name or any account, and it lets the app apply a daily practice limit and see whether people come back.
- Your IP address. Recorded with your practice sessions and used to enforce per-network limits and prevent abuse.
- Practice activity. Which scenario and step you attempted, when, how many transmissions you made, how each one was graded (for example correct, or which required part was missing, but never the words you said), response times, and the API cost of each turn. For a scenario you build: the airports you looked at, the airport, runways and calls you picked, and which flights you started each week, to apply the free beta's limit of two a week. For the drills: which drill you opened, whether each answer was right, and your score. If the example call is offered on your first transmission, whether it was shown and opened.
- Your chosen callsign and aircraft type, if you enter them.
- Your settings and how you use the app, such as which practice options you had switched on. These are anonymous preferences, recorded so that features can be improved or removed based on whether they are actually used.
- Your browser identification (user-agent) string. This is the standard description every browser sends with each request, for example "Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 17_0 like Mac OS X) … Safari/604.1". It names the browser, its version, and sometimes the device model. It is recorded so that faults affecting only one browser or one kind of device can be found and fixed: the microphone in particular behaves differently across phones, and inside apps that open links in their own built-in browser. It is not used to identify you or to build a profile, and it is not shared with anyone.
- Messages you send through the contact form: your message, its topic, the scenario or airport it is about (if any), and your email address only if you choose to give it.
- Emails you send to hello@radio.training: they arrive in the owner's inbox and are kept only to reply to you.
- Your email address, if you join the founding-member list. The list is offered after you have finished a few scenarios or drills, and joining is optional. With your email it stores the note you add (if any), your visitor ID and how many scenarios and drills you had finished. It is used to send you one message when the paid plan opens, and for nothing else.
- The site that sent you here. When your browser provides it, the name of the website you followed a link from (for example google.com), never the full address of the page.
What the app does not store
- Your microphone audio is never saved. While you hold the mic button, audio streams to our speech-to-text provider for live transcription and is not written to our disk.
- The microphone is on, but nothing is sent, until you hold the button. Once you allow it, the microphone stays on while the app is open, because turning it off makes an iPhone play the controller through the earpiece. On iPhones, the audio drills also turn it on when you press Start, because iPhones only play web audio with the silent switch on while the microphone is on. Either way, audio leaves your phone only while you hold the transmit button in a scenario.
- Your transcripts are never saved. What you say is held in memory only for the duration of the scenario, so the AI controller can reply in context, and is discarded when the session ends. It is never written to disk.
- Anything you write on the notepad. The notepad beside the mic is scratch paper: it is kept in your own browser so it is still there if you come back to a scenario, and it is never transmitted, never graded, and never seen by anyone but you.
- No tracking cookies. The app remembers your settings in browser localStorage, not in cookies, and sets no cookie to follow you between sites.
- No analytics, no advertising, no tracking pixels, no third-party scripts.
Services the app sends data to
To make the conversation work, parts of a turn are sent to a small number of third-party service providers, who process it on our behalf under their own terms. By category:
- A speech-to-text provider. Receives your microphone audio in order to transcribe it.
- An AI language provider. Receives the text of what you said, plus the current scenario's exchange, to assess the call and generate the controller's reply.
- A text-to-speech provider. Receives only the controller's reply text, to speak it aloud. It never receives your voice or your words.
- A cloud hosting provider. Runs the application.
Nightly backups of the stored data described above are kept in a private repository.
How long it is kept
Practice activity, session records and feedback are kept for as long as the app runs. The founding-member list is kept until the paid plan opens, or until you ask to be removed. Nightly backups are retained for 365 days.
A note on callsigns
If you enter a real aircraft registration, it is stored alongside your session record. A registration can identify a real aircraft and its owner. If that concerns you, use any valid-format callsign instead. The app treats them all the same.
Your choices
Clearing your browser's site data for this site removes your visitor ID, callsign, settings, notepad contents and your record of which scenarios you have finished, and your next visit is treated as a new visitor. If you would like the data associated with your visitor ID or a message removed, email hello@radio.training or use the contact page, and it will be deleted.
Children
This app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top will change with it.
